maurice ravel: violin sonata no.2: "blues" (1923-27)
yaz lancaster, violin
nelson padgett, piano
"ravel’s second violin sonata draws influence from jazz, though the composer didn’t visit america until 1928, a year after this piece was written. it’s noted that ravel was exposed to jazz through 20s parisian cafes, which allowed him to come up with the material for this piece, especially the second movement which features jazzy slides & blue notes, as well as strenuous, explosive pizzicato. the first movement of the sonata coalesces ravel’s more characteristic colors & fuses his impressionistic idiom with elements of early jazz. the movements of "road movies" seem to mirror the form of this work, which i like to think adams referenced." - yaz
